Dive into the SCOOP This Summer
/June 30, 2021

We can’t think of a better beach read this summer than the SCOOP! During your downtime in the weeks ahead, catch up on all the scholarly communication conversation you may have missed since the SCOOP was launched in 2017.
Scholarly Communication
There are many national and global organizations leading the way in developing initiatives and providing education on scholarly communication. Learn more about them and how to get involved in our guide to these actors and influencers: https://0-www-atla-com.librarycatalog.vts.edu/blog/scoop-actors-and-influencers/
Growing librarian and information provider competencies comprises one-third of Atla’s organizational ends. We covered librarian competencies in scholarly communication in this early SCOOP post: https://0-www-atla-com.librarycatalog.vts.edu/blog/the-scoop-we-are-all-scholarly-communications-librarians/
Academic Publishing
Best practices in academic publishing are a regular topic in the SCOOP. Revisit these posts to discover today’s critical issues in publishing:
- Responsible sharing of published research. https://0-www-atla-com.librarycatalog.vts.edu/blog/the-scoop-researchgate-and-the-coalition-for-responsible-sharing/
- Preservation of open access literature. https://0-www-atla-com.librarycatalog.vts.edu/blog/scoop-preserving-open-access-literature/
- Lifting up unheard voices in academic writing. https://0-www-atla-com.librarycatalog.vts.edu/blog/scoop-acwrimo-words-missing/
- Importance of the use of persistent identifiers. https://0-www-atla-com.librarycatalog.vts.edu/blog/scoop-how-persistent-identifiers-work/

Open Access and Open Education
Open access continues to be a dominant topic in scholarly communication discourse. We celebrate Open Access Week every October, and for the past couple years equity and inclusion in open access have been the theme. See our coverage of this event and this topic at https://0-www-atla-com.librarycatalog.vts.edu/blog/scoop-open-access-week-2020/ and https://0-www-atla-com.librarycatalog.vts.edu/blog/scoop-openaccessweek-19/.
The SCOOP has also covered open access basics such as the various pathways to make content available open access (https://0-www-atla-com.librarycatalog.vts.edu/blog/the-scoop-who-knows-the-way-to-get-to-oa/) and how to locate and evaluate open access resources (https://0-www-atla-com.librarycatalog.vts.edu/blog/the-scoop-searching-for-open-access-content/). Many of these open access resources would not be available were it not for open source infrastructure used in its production and dissemination. See the SCOOP’s review of this infrastructure, including what is utilized by Atla Open Press, at https://0-www-atla-com.librarycatalog.vts.edu/blog/scoop-open-source/.
Related to the discussion of open access is the importance of open educational resources (OER). The SCOOP, through a series of posts, has provided tools and resources to help our librarians get started in advocating for and creating OER:
- Learn the basics of OER. https://0-www-atla-com.librarycatalog.vts.edu/blog/the-scoop-the-a-b-cs-and-rs-of-oer/
- Ready to start creating OER? https://0-www-atla-com.librarycatalog.vts.edu/blog/scoop-getting-started-with-oer-creation/
- Check out these resources to begin OER advocacy at your institution. https://0-www-atla-com.librarycatalog.vts.edu/blog/scoop-open-education-week-2021/
Copyright
A topic that is not only important to librarians but also to the SCOOP, and thus making frequent appearances here, is copyright.
Fair use of copyrighted materials in teaching, publishing, and in the provision of library services are covered in the following posts:
- Fair use is essential to the creation of new knowledge. https://0-www-atla-com.librarycatalog.vts.edu/blog/scoop-fair-use-week-2021/
- The Georgia State University course reserve case has contributed greatly to the fair use discourse and shaped how libraries deliver course materials. Find complete coverage of this case and its conclusion at https://0-www-atla-com.librarycatalog.vts.edu/blog/the-scoop-the-continuing-conundrum-of-copyright-and-course-reserves/ and https://0-www-atla-com.librarycatalog.vts.edu/blog/scoop-georgia-state-copyright/.
- The pandemic also prompted revisiting the bounds of fair use when delivering course materials online. https://0-www-atla-com.librarycatalog.vts.edu/blog/scoop-covid-19-copyright-course-materials/
- Fair use not only impacts how libraries deliver online course materials but other facets of online teaching. Review our guidance at https://0-www-atla-com.librarycatalog.vts.edu/blog/scoop-copyright-and-online-teaching/ and https://0-www-atla-com.librarycatalog.vts.edu/blog/scoop-fair-use-fair-dealing-week-2019-fair-use-in-online-education/.
- The application of fair use by libraries and in education has largely been shaped by several important federal cases involving the use of copyrighted material in music, literature, and other pop culture artifacts. https://0-www-atla-com.librarycatalog.vts.edu/blog/scoop-fair-use-in-pop-culture/
